Flood Observations

Of all of the offers of financial and humanatarian relief that have been offered to the people of the gulf coast, a few of them have meant the most to me. They weren't offers of billions of dollars, however they were offers that touched me deeply.

One of them was the donation of $25,000 to the Red Cross that was given by the small island nation of Sri Lanka, a country that is still recovering from the tsunami last year. It is also a country where many of its citizens live in conditions like those of post-hurricane Gulf Coast on a normal basis. Another was a neighbor-girl of mine asking her mommy if she could send the money in her piggy bank to help the victims. After asking that, she asked if she could mail them some food and water. It reminded me that children aren't quite as naive as we might expect. Perhaps there are lessons there for us to learn.

I have never been so embarrassed in our country's government as I have been lately. Donate. Anything. www.RedCross.org
