Soooo, the cycle of loaning money to these debtor nations and every few years turning around and forgiving their debt just isn't enough anymore?
Been there, done that, it's a good thing. Hate the cliche's but they seemed okay in the moment. hugs! Wearin' my ONE bracelet even as I speak, er, type.
(from the petition) Because: (* my comments) ONE billion people around the world live on less than ONE dollar a day; * So, get a better job. The US has done a disservice to people around the world by funneling money to "the poor". What we've done is basically pay people to do no better for themselves and just stay where they are. Really, come on, if you lived in a stinkhole in Africa, you'd get up and go elsewhere; why should we expect these people to stay put? The US government spends less than ONE percent on overcoming global AIDS and poverty; Citizens are uniting as ONE across political and religious divides to support action to overcome the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty. * less than one percent of GNP...do you have any freaking idea what that is??? The US GDP is $11,750,000,000,000. One percent of that is $117,500,000,000! That figure alone is in the top 50 of any country's individual TOTAL GDP. The US GDP is 1/5 of the World GDP. So when someone says to you "that's all the US contributues?" you should say yeah, that's all and we ought to cut back on that. At the G8 leaders meeting on July 6th we urge you to: Help the poorest people of the world fight poverty, AIDS and hunger at a cost equal to just ONE percent more of the US budget on a clear timetable; Cancel 100% of the debts owed by the poorest countries; * ergo, PROMISE to keep the money flowing Reform trade rules so poor countries can earn sustainable incomes. * trade rules aren't keep you poor bucko, it's the money we throw at you that keeps your ass lazy I'm all for wanting to feel good about myself, like I did something to help my fellow man out; but this isn't doing that. We've turned half the world into a nanny-state. I'm tired of my pockets being raided so we can bulldoze money over to Africa (or insert 3rd world despot-run hellhole here) just so Mbougou can have another 9 kids in the middle of land that would support a single gila monster. I'm done, you're on your own, figure out how to pay for it yourselves. I'd support sending a letter to Bush urging him to tell the G8 that the free ride is over.
