Shocked and Dismayed.

Fuck me running with a chainsaw people!!!! Movable Type, the wonderful software that I use to manage my content with has released version 3.0. With that release, they have started charging for licensing. Due to posts on Metafilter, and also the web all-over, I can see that people are exhibiting their true alligator-arms and are unable to reach down to their wallets. Here is my question to them.... Would they spend countless thousands of hours developing a product, see it become a large commercial success, then simply keep giving away??? I would dare say not.

The skill of being able to write good software is a huge commodity, and should be regarded as such. That very skill should at very least be able to give an individual the freedom from having to work a regular 9 to 5 job for some mega-corporation, and let them live a comfortable life writing code in their underwear on the couch.

I have a few suggestions to those who have such a ridiculously huge problem with the new fee structure...

1. Learn to write code, and develop your own content management software. Good luck.
2. As a few friends of mine have already done, switch over to a free, albeit less functional content management system.
3. Keep using Movable Type 2.661. It is free, and a wonderful product.
4. Just shut the hell up and quit complaining. If you need content for your blog that badly, maybe you shouldn't be wasting your money on the hosting fee.

That's all for now.

Here, Here. I agree with you on all the points. And being a software programmer, I can appreciate all the time, sweet and tears that can go into a program and am willing to pay for products that are good and well written. That being said, I personally love the power and flexibility that Expression Engine from pmachine offers me and am/was willing to pay for it.
quit yer belly-aching. there's still gonna be a free product: http://www.sixapart.com/corner/archives/2004/05/its_about_time.shtml One author, six blogs.
